Shop Painting Practices

Many facility owners are specifying one-, two-, even three- coat systems to be applied in the shop. A survey of steel bridge fabricators revealed that 100% of the shops surveyed consider paint to be most costly item for them. Comments included, "Cure times create bottlenecks, handling is expensive, blast cleaning to SSPC-SP10 is difficult, and edge preparations is time consuming and expensive."

To assist shops in the successful performance of coating operations, KTA offers a two-day, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) sanctioned Sophisticated Paint Endorsement (SPE) training curriculum. This curriculum also meets the training requirements for shops seeking SSPC QP3 certification.
